Science Curriculum

Through the generous donation of the PFA, we were able to purchase a standards based science curriculum. As a staff, we chose the Houghton Mifflin Science Discovery Works. Along with introducing the scientific method of inquiry, we cover five scientific subject areas: Life Cycles, What Makes Me Sick, Energy and Motion, Earth's Materials, and Electricity and Magnetism.

We are currently using the Houghton Mifflin Science Discovery Works text book. Methods of instruction involve uses of linguistic, visual/spatial, logical/mathemtatical, kinesthetic, auditory, and social/cooperative learning styles to reach all students. We use and introduce "the scientific method of inquiry." Our text is based on three educational standards:

 

  1. The benchmarks for Science Literacy prepared by Project 2061
  2. The National Science Education Standards
  3. The Science Content Standards for the State of California

    • How forces affect motion
    • Sound waves, pitch, and volume
    • Heat energy and uses of natural resources of heat

  • EARTH'S MATERIALS :
    • Properties and composition of soil and rocks
    • Uses of rocks, plants, soil, and water
    • Volcanoes and earthquakes
    • Weathering and erosion
    • How fossils provide clues about the earth's history

  • ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM :
    • Uses of electricity
    • How electricity works
    • What are magnets
    • Uses of magnets in everyday living
    • How magnets work
