What is an IEP?

The Individualized Education Program (IEP) describes the special education and related services specifically designed to meet the educational needs of a student with a disability. The program is developed at one or more IEP meetings, and its provisions are detailed in writing. The IEP is developed by a committee. It contains goals based on the student’s present level of educational performance. In addition, the IEP specifies the educational placement or setting and the related services necessary to reach these goals and objectives. It also includes the date the services will begin, how long they will last, and the way in which the student’s progress will be evaluated. The IEP is revised as the needs of the student change. the annual review of the IEP serves as an evaluation of the students progress toward meeting the educational goals and objectives. A triennial review, every three years, is a thorough reassessment to reestablish eligibility and redefine a student’s needs.

The IEP team consists of an administrator or designee, the general education teacher and the multidisciplinary team, anyone who has been a part of the assessment process, the students parents or guardian. Other members can be included as necessary or appropriate, such as parent selected advocate, district representative, or the student. If a student is found eligible to receive services and the parent wishes the student to receive these services, it is then decided where the student’s needs should be met. The law states that the students needs should be met in the “least restrictive” environment able to meet his/her specific needs. These environments are ranked below from least restrictive to most restrictive:

1. Regular class
2. Regular class with RSP support (up to 49% of the day)
3. Special Day Class (SDC) at least 51% of the school day up to 100%
This is the most restrictive setting on a regular school campus.

Once eligibility has ben established and placement has been decided, goals/objectives are written in the areas which a student will receive assistance.
